Though one of the great beacons drawing travellers and students alike to Italy is its historic art and cultural history, one would be very limited in going on such a trip and expect it to be all about the past. True that the rolling hills and vineyards of Tuscany, the rustic houses, and old-world style of the smaller towns may cause you to think you're taking a step back in time. However, in reality Italy is in a constant state of flux, and you can instantly find yourself in the present moment in many ways.. dancing in the art of conversation, the discussion of politics, going on outings with friends or a host family, finding out the ways that the European Union is causing change in the way of life for Italians in various regions of the country. Of course there are many ways in which the past and present collide into one as an ongoing preservation of tradition mixed in with a few pepperings of modern innovation. It is up to you as the traveler, the student-- the taster, to pick up these subtleties and find out just where in the mix you fit in, and where Italy fits into your life and perspective. Buona fortuna!

A study abroad in Italy is a wonderful way to explore the country. I stayed in Perugia, one of the many hilltop towns of the Umbrian countryside. Not only was the geography perfect, making weekend trips to Rome, Florence, and Venice as simple as a train ride, it was unblemished by the throngs of tourists that flock to the major cities. I experienced real Italian culture and practiced the language in a place that doesn't automatically cater to English. I took afternoons to visit the Basilica di San Francesco in Assisi, count San Gimingnano’s towers and stand in Il Campo of Siena, enjoying beauties more subtle and less trafficked. <br/>And if you are going to spend a few months in a place, you want it to be one with great cuisine. Pizza, pasta and gelato every day? Perfetto.

Spending time in Italy is like walking through the pages of an art history book. You can feel centuries of compiled culture from the ground to the tops of towers and cathedrals. The streets are lined with world-famous architecture and statues, connected by delicious traditional eateries and high-fashion boutiques. The more time passed in the country, the better. From the awesome and unbelievable piazzas and fountains of Rome to the museums and churches of Florence, to Venice´s watery foundation, it´s recommended to take as much time as possible in each city to avoid beauty overload. The breathtaking views encompass cities dripping with culture that led to much of what we consider modern today - from art to philosophy to political throught. Italy is an experience in modern development that savors its rich ancient roots.
